The goal of VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) is to offer to companies a sharing of IT resources: you can therefore see a VPN as the geographic extension of a corporate private local network, which guarantees privacy, anonymity and security data through a communication channel reserved for authorized devices only, although located in any geographical point of the world. A VPN uses a technique that, thanks to a particular system, allows you to make your network activities invisible to unauthorized eyes (for example cybercriminals or government censorship bodies) and to mask the IP address from which you accesses the Internet.

VPNs are used in the company environment because they guarantee a series of significant advantages and, in particular:

  • cost reduction: thanks to the use of the Internet as a remote connection infrastructure for VPNs, the costs of maintaining a network are significantly reduced;

  • mobility and smart working: remote users and employees can safely connect to the resources of the corporate network or to each other from any place and at any time;

  • adaptability: a VPN-based infrastructure is easily adaptable to the needs of changing networks and is very flexible in that it can create a private network both between fixed and remote offices and between remote terminals;

  • security: the security and reliability of a VPN derive from the use of sophisticated techniques including tunneling, authentication and encryption. Tunneling involves establishing a secure tunnel between two final remote entities enabled to create a VPN. The authentication process is necessary in order to authorize access, ensure transmission, guarantee non-repudiation. Cryptography transforms the readable data by means of a digital algorithm into a coded and incomprehensible data for the unauthorized;

  • environment safeguarding: with climate change now clearly present on our territory and at a global level, VPN technology can help reduce travel, reduce their costs and the environment. All simply IT activities, documentation, application development, CAD/CAE design to name a few, can also be carried out through a VPN connection. The VPN, combined with a corporate ethics of an innovative, aware spirit and a national government policy determined to reduce pollution, can contribute to the protection of the environment.
